Protecting natural resources and being a good steward of the environment are core values of SWN. These values manifest themselves in everything we do, and we are broadly recognized as a responsible operator who does the Right Things with respect to our natural world. We take a rational, science-based approach to environmental issues, striving for full compliance with applicable laws and regulations and seeking productive relationships with the agencies that administer them.

Water Goal Achieved

In late 2016, SWN achieved “freshwater neutral” in each of our operating areas. Through this ambitious effort – which is unprecedented in the oil and gas industry – we offset or replenished every gallon of freshwater we used, through water-quality improvement projects or treatment technologies that return fresh water to the environment.

Reducing Methane Emissions

The ONE Future coalition is a group of 10 companies seeking to reduce methane emissions across the natural gas value chain to an average annual leak/loss rate of no more than 1 percent of gross U.S. natural gas production by 2025. SWN adopted the ONE Future methane leak/loss rate goal of 0.36 percent of gross production by 2025 (for combined production and midstream operations), and have achieved a rate of 0.19 percent. ONE Future has been adopted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as part of the Natural Gas STAR Methane Challenge Program.

Comprehensive Water Management

SWN’s water-related activities are guided by our Energy Conserving Water initiative, or ECH2O®. This initiative is an integrated approach to reducing water use, protecting water resources, finding innovative technologies and implementing conservation projects.

Watershed Restoration

Through the conservation aspect of ECH2O, we will undertake a project to restore a stream impacted by acid mine drainage (our second project of this type), after winning multiple awards for our first project in 2016. These restoration efforts have a wide array of environmental, community and economic benefits.
