Why do I have to pay a share of taxes and deductions?
Your payment of a share of these costs is standard practice, and your obligation to do so is established by your lease.
My check amounts received do not match the amount in Box 2 "Royalties" or Box 7 "Nonemployee compensation". Why not ?
Box 2 and Box 7 do not represent total cash received. These boxes are related to gross amounts prior to deductions and taxes. The dollar amount of the checks you received will tie to your listed "Net Total" on supplemental pages provided with your 1099.
Can I view my 1099 online?
In an effort to provide interest owners added convenience, in addition to mailing you your 1099, a copy of your 1099 will be populated on your SWN Owner Relations online account in early February. If you do not have a SWN Owner Relation account set up, please follow the link below and click the ‘Register Now’ button.

As always, if you have questions, please contact Southwestern Energy's Owner Relations line at 866.322.0801 ext 2.
I am divorced. Can you divide the amounts on my 1099 in half and send one new 1099 to me and one to my former spouse?
No, we cannot split the amounts on the 1099 as we must report the monies exactly as they were paid. We can; however, provide each person a copy of the 1099. You should consult a tax professional on if and how the monies can be split pursuant to the Divorce Decree. Once you have provided Southwestern Energy with a copy of the Divorce Decree evidencing that this ownership has been split or assigned to one of the parties, we will update our records and create new owner number(s), as necessary.
Do you withhold state or federal taxes upon request?
No. Per company policy, we only withhold federal taxes if requested by the IRS, or state taxes if required by a particular state. We do not withhold state or federal taxes on request.
Can you email/fax/mail a copy of my 1099 to my attorney or accountant?
Yes, we can forward a copy of a 1099 to an owner-assigned representative, but only with your direct permission, either by email, in writing, or over the phone. To do so, contact Southwestern Energy's Owner Relations line at 866.322.0801 ext 2 or OwnerRelations@swn.com
Why didn’t I get a 1099 for damages?
1099s are issued for Right of Way payments, but not associated damages.
Why didn’t I receive a 1099?
There are several reasons you may not have received a 1099, including:
- Your payment was less than the minimum royalties threshold of $10;
- Your payment was less than the minimum “anything else” threshold of $600;
- You did not receive any revenue for the reportable year;
- Your 1099 was mailed to the address we have on file, which may not be your current address; or
- 1099s were not issued to corporations or exempt entities
How can I change or update my address?
Address changes must be requested in writing and signed by all owners on the account. Our Division Order Department will make the address change on our system.

Please note, we cannot credit you back for any Federal Withholding done as a result of a missing TIN, but updating the TIN will stop withholding from that point forward.
Which amount do I report on my taxes: gross or net?
Southwestern Energy Company cannot issue tax advice. If you need further instruction on how to reflect your 1099-MISC on your tax return, please consult a tax professional.
I am a participating owner and received working interest income. Why is it reported in Box 7 (Nonemployee Compensation) instead of Box 2 (Royalty) or 3 (Other Income)?
IRS guidelines require us to report state oil and gas payments for working interest, whether or not services are performed, in Box 7 of the 1099-MISC.
