Environmental stewardship

In the communities where we live and work, we voluntarily engage our neighbors, the business community and other stakeholders. We take this approach so that an understanding of community and stakeholder needs and concerns can be understood and addressed. We implement formal processes to identify and determine the potential health, safety and environmental affects of our business activities so that impacts can be avoided, minimized and/or mitigated, where practical.

HS&E management plan

We take a strategic yet practical approach to making health, safety and the environment a part of everyday life. We have a HS&E Management System that enhances our ability to achieve our HS&E goals. The HS&E Management System establishes a corporate governance framework for HS&E compliance. Led by a team of experienced professionals, our HS&E department partners with all areas of the company to guide and support our activities. Our team of experienced professionals work to:
  • Identify potential impacts
  • Monitor, measure and verify performance standards
  • Train employees
  • Ensure compliance with all laws and regulations
  • Cooperate with local, state and federal regulatory agencies

Safety training

We work hard to build a culture of safety by developing and conducting a wide range of training programs for employees throughout the year.

Preparedness

Our HS&E department has designed a number of emergency preparedness plans to enhance our company’s responsiveness:

Southwestern Incident Management System (SIMS)
Southwestern has an internal web-based incident reporting system that requires initial reporting of spills, injuries, fires or explosions, vehicle incidents, theft, and vandalism, as well as any third-party documentation or notifications to agencies or landowners. The SIMS database automatically e-mails a notice of the incident report to designated persons so they can respond appropriately.

Incident Command System Emergency Response Plans
We have implemented customized plans for handling emergencies for each of our operating areas utilizing a template based upon the Incident Command System adopted by the United States government. We perform periodic company-wide drills and internal training at times that are least disruptive to operational schedules.
